๐Ÿซ˜ Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Commonly prescribed medications, what to avoid, and lifestyle guidance

๐Ÿ“‹ Overview

CKD means kidneys are damaged and cannot filter blood effectively. Staged 1-5. Most common causes are diabetes and high blood pressure.

๐Ÿ’Š Commonly Prescribed Medications
ACE Inhibitors (Lisinopril) / ARBs (Losartan)Kidney Protectors
Slow CKD progression. Essential in diabetic CKD. Monitor potassium and creatinine.
Empagliflozin (Jardiance) / DapagliflozinSGLT-2 Inhibitor
Strong kidney-protective effect. Recommended for CKD with or without diabetes.
Finerenone (Kerendia)Non-steroidal MRA
Newer medication for CKD with type 2 diabetes.
Furosemide (Lasix)Loop Diuretic
For fluid retention in CKD. Higher doses needed as kidney function declines.
Calcium carbonate / SevelamerPhosphate Binder
Controls high phosphate in CKD stages 3-5. Take with meals.
๐Ÿšซ What to Avoid

NSAIDs are nephrotoxic โ€” NEVER use in CKD. Metformin must be stopped below certain eGFR levels. Contrast dye requires precautions.

๐Ÿฅ— Lifestyle Tips

Low-sodium diet, low-potassium in advanced CKD, control blood pressure and blood sugar, avoid dehydration, never self-medicate with NSAIDs.

๐Ÿ“‹ Important Note
Many medications are dosed differently in CKD โ€” always tell every doctor your eGFR. Regular nephrology follow-up essential from stage 3.
